Basketball Basics: Footwork

Posted on Rabu, 30 Juni 2010 | 0 komentar
It is certainly fun watching basketball. But for players, the game isn't just fun. It is challenging.

There are lots of pressure that players undergo whenever they hit it to the court every game. They are of course committed to make the team win by accumulating more scores than the opponent. Aside from that, almost all players want to stand up to impress the viewing public.

In the tradition of Michael Jordan, Shacquille O'Neal, Dennis Rodman and the likes, every basketball player dreams of being an icon in sports. That is why almost all basketball secrets have been revealed.

There are also more coaches, trainers and centers that offer to help players develop proper attitude and skills in playing basketball. Almost all mental and physical aspects of basketball playing have also been discussed and openly assimilated by players.

The footwork

A strong footwork is considered one of the basic skills and characteristics a basketball player must possess to be able to become a good player. That is because everything else depends on the strength of the feet when playing.

Solid footwork is very necessary in executing basic basketball tasks and techniques like defense, rebounding, ball-handling, and many more. Basketball is a very physical game so without the solid foundation of the foot strength, you would easily end up being tripped at or knocked at the floor.

Because you basically run, jump, bend and walk during the basketball game, your footwork must be well built and planned. Further, during, before and after games, you are advised to take some flexing, relaxing and warming activities to condition your feet to become stronger for each game.

Footwork tips in basketball

Because footwork is such an important aspect of playing basketball, here are some tips that will truly help you attain good footing while playing the arduous game of basketball.

Attain good body balance during the game. It is recommended that you keep the base support of your feet wide. How do you do this? Simply keep each of your feet at least a shoulder apart from each other. Bend your knees a little and keep your head just above the midpoint between the area covered by the feet. This position is said to provide your body with good overall balance. While standing inside the basketball court, practice having this physical balanced position. Take a good pivoting point. A solid pivot is attained when the ball of the foot is planted firmly and solidly on the floor of the court. If you have a good pivoting position, you can easily turn and run to the left to right, or forward or backward. Good pivoting is essential for the best defensive strategies in the game. Take quick pivots by planting the balls of your feet on the ground. Then, attain proper body balance. This way, you are sure to be ready for quick and abrupt pivot turns.

Footwork exercises

Aside from the usual footwork drills, there are also several exercises that are simple enough and will surely help improve your footwork for both defensive and offensive tasks in playing basketball.

Here are some of them.

As a form of exercise, bend the knees, take proper balance standing position by spreading the feet at shoulder width. Then, step sideways. Eventually, make the little steps either to the left or to the right turn into short runs. The sideway movements will help you attain good and firm footwork sideways. Hop with just one leg forward from tone side of the basketball court until you reach half of the court. Bring down the foot and use the other one as you hop forward to the other end of the court. This exercise targets the muscles of the thighs and knees, making up for firmer and stronger footwork. Regular jogging and running exercises are proven to be effective in improving the footwork of basketball players. In the morning, or whenever there is time, jog around or run. It would also be advisable if you use a thread mill.

It would be impossible to play basketball if the strength of the feet isn't established. Because basketball is a very physical game, you should make sure your footwork is well practiced before the games.

Basketball: The Object of the Game

Posted on Selasa, 29 Juni 2010 | 0 komentar
Basketball is a fast paced game played on a 94-by-50 foot court (NBA) with 1 basket on opposite sides.

The game starts when the official tosses the ball between two players, one from each team, in the middle of the court. This is also referred to as the tip off. The other 8 players stand at specific places outside the mid-circle. The jumpers will try to tip the ball to any of their team members to gain the first possession.

The goal is to score more points than their opponents.

In the professional setting, the game is divided into 2 halfs or 4 quarters. Each quarter is 12 minutes long.

During each possession, the offensive team has a time limit to shoot the ball in the basket. This is called the shot clock. The NBA rule allows 24 seconds for each possession. In college basketball, the shot clock is set for 35 seconds.

There are basically 2 ways to shoot and score in a basketball game: shooting when the ball is in play and from the free throw line.

There are several ways to score during play. You can either take a perimeter shot or drive toward the basket. You can score 3 points if you shoot the ball beyond the arc. There are also variations for jump shots including from the baseline, the key, fade away, hook shot, and more. Variations of shots made inside the paint include dunk, layup, and tip-in.

Free throws are earned when the opposing team committs a technical foul or a personal foul. Two free throw shots are awarded when the opposing team committs a technical foul or a personal foul in the act of shooting or within the team penalty. One free throw shot is given to the player who made a shot and receives a foul in the process.

Each player is allowed to commit 5 personal fouls for each game to continue playing. The 6th foul will automatically force the player to retire for the rest of the game. Each player is automatically out of the game if he receives 2 technical fouls. The team is allowed to commits 5 fouls for each quarter before entering the penalty. Every foul made inside the penalty will put their opposing team to shoot free throws.

In the event where the scores are tied at the end of the fourth quarter (or at the end of the regulation period), a 5-minute overtime period is played. If the score is still tied at the end of the overtime period, a second overtime will be played, and so on... until a team wins a game.

Note: other basketball leagues and basketball associations such as FIBA follow their own sets of rules.

Basketball: How the Game Started

Posted on Senin, 28 Juni 2010 | 0 komentar
It all started with a child's game that the inventor, Dr. James Naismith used to play outside his schoolhouse when he was younger. This game was called duck-on-a-rock, it aimed to knock the duck off the rock by tossing another rock against it.

This then gave Dr. Naismith a concept of a game which he introduced to the students of YMCA Training School in 1891. Due to the cold weather, the trainees of the School for Christian Workers needed a game that could be played indoors and one that wouldn't use much strength. He then conceptualized a ball game that uses two baskets as goals with both teams competing for the most number of shots.

Apart from the game itself, he also outlined the first 13 rules on playing the game which covers the guidelines, distinction of violations and fouls, and the roles of both umpires and referees, including the duration of each game.

Thus, these events led to the actual birth of the game in December 21, 1881 when it was first played after Dr. Luther Gulick, the head of physical education at the YMCA, gave a two-week allowance for his employee to create a new game.

While the game would be developed in the following years, the students of the YMCA Training School loved it initially. It was even said that Dr. Naismith had a difficult time convincing his students to leave the game after each session.

The game went on to be played in the Olympics in Berlin, Germany where the USA Team beat the Canadian team with a score of 19-8. At this time, there were 22 nations that joined the competition. By 1976, Women's Basketball was introduced into the Olympics.

On August 3, 1949 in New York City, the National Basketball Association was formed. But prior to that were the creations of National Basketball League (NBL) in 1937 and Basketball Association of America (BAA) in 1946. The NBA now serves as the largest group in the history of basketball. There are only two leagues left which retained their names since the formation of NBA, the New York Knicks and Boston Celtics.

The first women's collegiate basketball was splayed on April 4, 1896 in San Francisco's Page Street Armory where Cal and Stanford met. Unlike the physical and strenuous game we now see in WNBA, the women basketball teams back in 1896 retained their ladylike approach in the game and rules were even modified to accommodate this natural tendency. Stanford then won with a 2-1 score against Cal team.

These events led to the popularity of basketball in our time.

Barcelona soccer stars, how they made this famous team a champion.

Barcelona won his 17th title at the Campeonato Nacional de la Liga (National League Championship), thanks to the famous soccer player Samuel Eto’o. The player native from Cameroon scored a remarkable goal becoming a determinant piece during the championship.

On the other hand, Ronaldinho who has been considered the best player of the year a couple of times and also the best player of the past championship was less notable in this occasion, but he was a hard opponent for his rivals. He showed again his domain like the goals scored at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium, which allowed the Barcelona team to win one more point over the Real Madrid.

But, we can not continue with this journal without mention the hard work developed from the defense Deco, who has been one of the soccer championship attractions. For Puyol, this is the first title with Barcelona.

Other important Barcelona soccer players are the Mexican Rafael Márquez, who was motivated to be an essential part in getting the title and Victor Valdés defending the frame being one of the most important position during the match.

Undoubtedly, Barcelona is one of the teams that show good soccer and strength in the middle of the camp, they deserve this title, congratulations!

Basic Paintball Gear Needed

Posted on Sabtu, 26 Juni 2010 | 0 komentar
The biggest concern while playing paintball is the safety and security of the players. Wearing the proper paintball gear will help to ensure that nobody will become injured while playing this fast-paced sport. Without a doubt, the use of air-pressured guns can be very dangerous if a person is not wearing appropriate safety gear.

There is a variety of paintball gear required when playing this sport, not just the paintball gun or marker. To help ensure you have all the proper equipment for this action-packed sport, below is a list of gears each person must have before he or she plays the sport.

1. The paintball mask is an essential piece of equipment that will protect your face. Since most serious injuries incurred are in the face, you are not allowed to play if you do not wear a protective mask.

2. Eye protection is another important piece of protection. Investing in a good set of goggles will prevent any splat of paint for getting into your eyes.

3. Each person must have a paintball gun. The gun is used to eliminate your opponent, and thus is a critical piece in your arsenal. Remember to thoroughly research the different types of guns available before making your selection.

4. Of course, you must also have paintballs to shoot at your opponents. You should try to conserve your paintballs while playing and only shoot when you have the target in site.

5. The hopper is another piece of paintball gear you can’t do without. The hopper is where your paintballs are placed. Standard hoppers will load your gun at a rate of 12bps or less. For faster guns, you will want an electronic hopper.

6. The barrel is used to guide the paintball towards the intended target. Brass barrels are relatively inexpensive and allow you to shoot in a straight path and at higher speeds because there is reduced friction.

7. Having air supply is essential and is used in both guns and pistols. Nitrogen and carbon dioxide are available. The carbon dioxide is less expensive, but nitrogen is better.

There are other optional accessories such as belt packs, scopes and kits that can give you an even greater advantage over your opponent. Some accessories are also needed to keep your paintball in good working condition. These include oil for lubing your gun, a squeegee for cleaning the barrel, and extra rings and seals.

The paintball gear that we listed above can be used as a basic checklist for beginners as you research the sport and before you begin making any purchases. Playing paintball is great fun, but the costs can run up quickly.

If you don’t have the extra money, start with the basic gear first, then purchase additional options as time goes on. Keep in mind you must be fully protected when playing paintball, so proper clothing and safety gear should be a top priority.

Basic Outfit And Accessories For Skaters And Skateboarders

Posted on Jumat, 25 Juni 2010 | 0 komentar
In sports, sometimes you need the right outfit and the right gear and accessories to get you in the game. With that reason aside, there is also another purpose for gearing you up with the right outfits and equipment.

There is a science behind every outfit you see matched for every sport. Don't you wonder why players of basketball, football, or hockey wear a different type of jersey? Sure it helps to tell them apart but the outfits are actually designed based on studies as to which type of clothing will affect the players’ performance. In extreme games such as skateboarding and skating, much is the same. Though you always see the characteristic casual clothing being worn by these extreme players, there is a reason that lies behind their choice of clothing.

The basic outfit of skaters and skateboarders alike are loose clothing. The sport itself can be rigorous and is usually done under the hot sun. Wearing comfortable loose clothing will help you in you performance. Remember, even a hint of being uncomfortable can affect the way you perform in a game. You wouldn’t want that to happen, even if you are just casually playing in a park or some place similar.

To focus more on basic sporting outfits, you can also be picky with the materials used for the type of clothing you wear. Under hot climates, it is better to wear clothing of micro-fiber material rather than cotton blend clothing. This is because the micro-fiber doesn’t absorb wet which can make you feel heavy and weighed down. Micro-fiber clothing helps wick sweat and moisture away keeping you feel lighter and better refreshed. Some prefer clothing that is made from spandex or lycra material. These types of material offer quite a good amount of protection from road rash but don’t protect you much from falls. Another reason why some skaters like spandex or lycra because this can be worn concealed under your loose shorts or pants and thus give you added protection.

However, with sports, it doesn’t end with the discussion of the right outfit. After you have decided on an outfit, you best fit yourself in protective gear. When you look at accessories for skating and skateboarders, you should always look towards the protective gear first. What protective gear should first be considered? Why don’t you start with a good helmet? You don’t see extreme sports gamers doing their stuff without their helmets on, don’t you? Of course not because this is practically the only accessory that protects one of the most vital parts of your body, your head. But you may ask what exactly to look for in a good helmet. What exactly makes a helmet exceptionally good?

When you are looking to buy a helmet, make sure you choose one that was made from a manufacturer reputed for quality products. It is also best that you look for helmets that are certified ASTM F-1492. Take note however, that this is not mandatory by law, ASTM is only voluntary but it helps with added safety and protection. But don’t stop from there because if you find helmets that are also certified by the CPSC bicycle standards, then this is a better choice. When you ultimately decide on a helmet, make sure it has the proper fit and the chin straps are adjusted correctly to your facial and head structure.

Since you are browsing for protective gear, you should also take into consideration the other areas of your body that are prone to contact the hard surfaces of the ground and such areas that are vulnerable for breaking. Wearing elbow, wrist, knee, shin, and ankle guards or pads will basically cover these risky areas. More often than not, being a skater or skateboarder you fall when you are playing or even when you are just practicing a new trick. Your body is not invincible to the surfaces you come in contact with, especially when you’re doing more daring moves. Though these protective guards don’t prevent you from having an accident, they lessen the damage you might incur and prevent you from garnering major injuries.

Sports clothing manufacturers have now incorporated the importance of protection rather than comfort and performance in their design. An example of this creation would be the padded shorts which you can wear as a simple short when you’re out skating. But rather than just feeling comfortable playing your sport, you are given the extra protection at the same time. This is a great solution for most skaters as they won’t have to constantly pad their clothing to feel safe in a game.

Of course, when you want to talk about accessories, there's one item you shouldn't miss and that is the belt or accessory bag. Skating and skateboarding require your hands to be free in order for you to fully enjoy the sport. Having a belt or accessory bag on hand keeps you close to your necessities such as mp3 players, mobile phones, and even a bottle of water. But there is an alternative to the belt bag and that is achieved by wearing loose cargo pants. You can wear these pants when you are out skating or skateboarding and the extra pockets it has gives you the necessary space to keep your things in. Just make sure you are not carrying anything too heavy. As skating and skateboarding requires the balance of your body and the dexterity of your legs, it is best you don’t weigh these areas down.

The next time you want to go out to the park or with friends to skate or skateboard, think about what you are wearing. There’s more to sporting outfits than just looking good. It has to protect you from injuries and enhance your performance as well.

Baseballs Cloud of Controversy

Posted on Kamis, 24 Juni 2010 | 0 komentar
Although Baseball has never been a stranger to controversy. From the 1919 Chicago Black Sox, to Pete Rose betting on baseball, to Sammy Sosa’s corked bat. And now the on going soap opera of Barry Bonds suspected steroid use, it is in no way hurting in the ratings and fan department.

Why is this?

I think I have the answer, but of course, it is just my opinion.

Remember the baseball of the 70's and 80's, the days of the tight uniforms and relief pitchers being driven to the mound in carts that looked like big baseballs.

It was the days when a slugger only needed to hit 28 home runs to lead the league in homers, and the triple crown didn’t seem like an impossibility.

The days before anyone had coined the term set up man for the pitcher that came in in the eighth inning, and the only thing intimidating about a relief pitcher was his mullet.

Lets face it, and no pun intended, baseball needed a shot in the arm.

I mean who wants to go to a game and watch batters hit singles all day. I sure don’t.

Thank God for Maguire, Bonds, Sosa, Ken Griffey jr, Palmero, etc. Regardless of what they were pumping into their bodies, they made baseball exciting again.

And why is all the focus of suspected steroid use on the sluggers only? What about the pitchers? They are bigger and bulkier than ever, and more and more can rush a fast ball up their at 100 plus mph. Why are they not under a microscope?

If guys like Barry Bonds are going to be criticized for using performance enhancing drugs, than perhaps they should ban pitchers from having Tommy John surgery because it is considered performance enhancing surgery.

As you may or may not know, after this surgery, a pitcher always comes back with better velocity on the ball.

Cheating and baseball go hand in hand. From doctoring up the baseball, to corked bats, to steroid use. If a player can find an angle to improve his game and believe that he can get away with it, he most definitely will. Lets just hope they don’t all end up like Ken Caminiti.

Baseballs’ Greatest Cheaters

Posted on Rabu, 23 Juni 2010 | 0 komentar
The great American game of baseball!! Home runs, triple plays, and the World Series, make viewing this sport a great pastime. Fans, over generations of time, have come to hold special individual memories of baseball. It’s sealed in their minds; baseball IS the greatest sport of all time. Remembering, all is in the eye of the beholder, can it be that baseball history can define itself by years of great team lineups, talented athletes, extravagant game plays and greatest cheaters???

Who would have thought that in all baseball has provided for its fans, a set of stats dedicated to cheaters would fit in? No one would think that there would be a way that great athletes would conjure up or develop ways to improve their stats, career or even their place in baseball history. It is proven, however, that Hall of Fame greats and record breakers in the field of ball playing would actually be at the head of such schemes--no matter the severity of the scheme. Cheaters have been recognized throughout this sport since almost at its beginnings.

The most notable offenders and cheating title holders would be: John McGraw, Gaylord Perry, Ty Cobb, Mike Scott, Ken Hrbeck, Joe Niekro, Pete Rose, and Albert Belle. Later, and to add some variety to this interesting topic, one of the many baseball scandals include the 1919 Chicago White Sox sellout.

John McGraw was a Hall of Fame great who had a reputation for holding base runners by their belt loops and would even go as far as blocking and tripping runners. He was not afraid to try this stunt with runners larger than his 155lb frame.

Gaylord Perry, Hall of Fame inductee, had the infamous "spitter" ball or "Vaseline ball". While compiling his 314-265 record, this pitcher would stand on his mound and touch his sleeve or cap. At these times, he would "load up" his ball, or appear to "load up" his ball in order to psych out the batter at the plate, enhancing the hopes for a strikeout. Because of this naughty habit, this great athlete was one of the few pitchers in the sport to get reprimanded. In 1982 he was suspended from baseball for doctoring the ball.

Ty Cobb, or otherwise known as the "Georgia Peach", was not a Hall of Famer, but held dozens of the league’s records. However, despite the records, the major reason that this athlete was able to steal bases on occasion without fail was because fielders would fear the wrath of his sharpened spikes. Cobb had a nasty habit of using his pointed spikes as weapons on the base paths.

Mike Scott, also a holder of dozens of major league statistics, had a habit of using emery boards not for the nails on his hands but to shave a little bit here and there on the ball. Altering the ball in this way allowed many of the hitters to be potential strikeout victims.

Kent Hrbek was a charismatic player who helped his team reach two World Series. In 1991, his charisma was not enough to save him when in a play, a member of the opposing team landed on his base. Lo and behold, Hrbek in an orchestrated maneuver he thought to be covert bumped the fellow off the base. He tagged the guy out. What Hrbek did not know, was that there were cameras running at certain angles poised to catch him in the act. Hrbek himself found out what it was like to be OUT!

Joe Niekro was no stranger to the emery board, ball-shaving fix. Even though Niekro claimed the emery board in his pocket was to file his fingernails so he could keep his knuckleball skills in check, it wasn’t until 1987 he was caught cheating. An umps’ eye caught an emery board flying out of Niekro’s pocket and Niekro got suspended for 10 days, no doubt giving the pitcher sufficient time to keep a neat set of nails.

Pete Rose was a gambler. At times in the world of sports, inside information has benefited players or fans alike. One small fact could swing a bet one way or another, but no one would think that a player would bet on his own team. It would not only be ethically incorrect, but a detrimental career move if caught. Hall of Fame inductee Pete Rose made such a career-crippling move by placing bets on the outcomes of his own teams’ games!

In the unholy name of baseball cheating, there was Albert Belle. He was known to have "his own kind" of special bat; one that could have been known to hold more cork than a million bottles of champagne. In 1994, Belle was suspended for seven games in an occurrence where Albert’s bat was confiscated by an umpire after suspicions of bat tampering were made known to him.

Last, but probably forever in the name of baseball, not least, it would only seem fair to mention one event that has come to be known as one of baseball’s greater scandals. Most times, individual team members could be blamed for tampering with this great sport. But for the sake of keeping any more skeletons from coming out of closets, it can be safe to discuss this topic: The 1919 Chicago White Sox Sellout. Imagine a crowd of fans that grow to the tune of around 43,000 strong. Fans driving from far and wide. Fans waiting to see their team rise to victory in The World Series. Hopes for the true fan gets crushed when it is discovered that eight players of one team were paid off to lose to the other team. Then insult adds to injury; it becomes clear that the event was due to a master mob plan. The eight players involved get suspended, and later are banned from baseball for life. The White Sox reputation suffers for many years to come.

With all that said, throughout baseball’s history of cheaters and scandal, there is only one phrase that can sum up the result of the intentions of those trying to reinvent the rules of baseball for personal gain and that phrase is - "Cheaters NEVER prosper."

Baseball-Coaching the Youth of Tomorrow

Posted on Selasa, 22 Juni 2010 | 0 komentar
Coaching our youth is a delicate practice that needs to be taken with the kids self confidence at the heart of the teaching. These days, parents and coaches alike want to win so bad, they put undue stress on the kids that can have a negative effect.

We over criticize when we are talking to them instead of building up their self confidence. I once heard a parent yelling at his kid from the stands, "If you don't get a hit, you will not be eating dinner tonight!" Needless to say, I went up and spoke with the parent about this approach. Some people may think this is harmless, and it may have been said in a joking fashion. But think of the kid on the field who is playing in front of all the parents and friends who hears this as he is strolling up to the plate. Talk about stress and the feeling of rejection and humiliation if this kid doesn't come through.

Remember, we are building more than just ballplayers here. We are building people who are going to go out in the world someday. We are building character, pride, self confidence. We do this through encouragement and a nourishing attitude. Not through pointing out failures and humiliation.

But how do we get them to play better if they can't stand a little criticism? By encouraging them. When your kid takes a swing and misses, the first words out of your mouth should be, "Nice swing! You just missed it, keep trying and you'll get a hit!" That encourages your kid to keep trying. Not only that, your kid will be excited about trying more. This promotes self confidence.

If your kid strikes out 4 times in the game. Put an arm around him after the game and tell him he really swung the bat well and that he will get them next time. And tell him how proud you are of him for trying.

Remember these simple tips:

1- Encourage them through positive reinforcement.

2- Nurture them when times are tough.

3- Be there for them when they need your help.

4- And love them unconditionally.

Remember, help your kids out by encouragement. I can't say this enough. They will believe what they hear and if you are encouraging them all the time, they will feel good about themselves. Not only in baseball but in other things.
And also remember, be patient. They are still learning,so you need to give them time to succeed. Just keep loving them and nurturing them and the rest will fall in place.

We all have a responsibility to help our youth. They are the future stars of tomorrow, both on and off the field. However, how you coach your kid and other parent's kids, helps mold that child forever. Remember that. You are
molding them forever. The lessons you teach them now will stick with them. They are like sponges and take in everything. So feed them love and nourishment and confidence and watch them grow. As they say, you have to water
your flowers to watch them bloom beautifully. Same goes for your child.

Don't hesitate to put an arm around them when they have had a bad game or struck out 3 times. Encourage them and love them. And remember, they are learning lessons in life by playing the game of baseball, so teach them well!

Baseball Tickets

Posted on Senin, 21 Juni 2010 | 0 komentar
The choicest seats to the best baseball games in the sporting calendar are available on the Internet, at authorized ticket outlets as well as independent ticket brokers. Here are a few pointers to find the best baseball tickets online.

First, decide which event you want to witness your favorite baseball team in. Confirm availability in the tickets section of the team's website. Find a team-sponsored online ticket box office. Some teams offer this service so their season ticket holders can sell tickets to games they cannot attend, which makes it the best place to find a choice seat at a reasonable price. You can also visit an independent online ticket broker like StubHub.com and browse through the wide range of tickets available for purchase. These sites offer tickets that are put up for sale by season ticket holders who cannot attend the game. For great deals and bargains, also visit ticket marketplaces like eBay.

Make sure though that you know in advance how and when you will get your tickets before sending your money to any of these sites.

It is important, as in the case of any online transaction, to ensure the website where you buy tickets from is secure and reputable. Secure websites will have a seal of approval from the Better Business Bureau, Verisign or other such organizations. You must always ensure before the actual purchase that you have a good seat, by checking a map of the ballpark, a facility available at StubHub.com.

With a ticket broker there is a wider range of seating options to choose from. However, there are often several additional fees that apply, like facility charges convenience charges, order processing fees and the delivery price. These fees often jack up the overall price per ticket.

The other option, purchasing tickets from an authorized ticket outlet like Ticketmaster or Tickets.com, can involve visiting their centers “no more than one hour in advance of the event on sale time", after which you will be part of a lottery-like random number distribution (RND) procedure. Post-lottery, you can tell the ticket agent what price range of seats you would like (the day tickets go on sale you may only select tickets by price, you will not have the option to choose any particular seating area), view the seating chart, and then the tickets will be printed and paid for.

Buying tickets from a popular and reputable ticket broker might cost a little extra, but you can pick and choose from great seats that are best suited to your budget.

Baseball Theme Scores Home Run For Birthday Party Planning

Posted on Minggu, 20 Juni 2010 | 0 komentar
If you are planning a birthday party for your little baseball fan, a party theme surrounding the great American pastime may be just the ticket. In order to plan the perfect event, there are several options to consider. Where and when will the birthday party be held? How many invitations will be sent? What type of food and activities will be available to guests? If you live near a party supply store, this will be an excellent way to find birthday party decorations and invitations. Otherwise, the world wide web provides a literal shopping mall at your fingertips.

In selecting a location for the baseball-themed birthday party, consider a local stadium, ballpark or softball field where the children can enjoy participating in a quick game. If this is the selected location, it's a good idea to take the upcoming weather into consideration. Unless you want the big game to be rained out, select a day with predicted sunshine. A local batting cage may also be a fun idea for a birthday party surrounded by the theme of baseball.

No birthday party is complete without the proper decorations. With a baseball theme, the party may include a round cake in the design of a baseball or a sheet cake created to look like a playing field. As for the table decorations, themed plates, cups and napkins will be a big hit. Now that the decorations are chosen, the obvious food for a baseball birthday party would be hot dogs. If the party is held outdoors, grilling would be ideal.

If you have the financial resources to do so, you may consider hiring a professional coach or athlete to appear at the birthday party. An appearance fee will likely be required and will be determined based on the popularity of the celebrity, their time spent, travel distance and other factors. In addition to being a memorable guest of the birthday party, the presence of a professional athlete or coach will also provide plenty of photo opportunities.

When all of the plans are confirmed, the invitations should be mailed. Birthday party invitations should indicate several very specific factors, including the date, time and place of the event. If planning a baseball theme, perhaps the invitation image would convey the same. If the majority of guests are enrolled in school, the best time to hold the party would likely be on a Saturday. If you are concerned about having enough food and refreshments to go around, it may be a good idea to request that every prospective guest RSVP with their plans.

Baseball’s First-Month Awards

Posted on Sabtu, 19 Juni 2010 | 0 komentar
The calendar has turned on the first month of the 2006 baseball season. While there is plenty of season left, it’s a good time to evaluate who has the early lead on baseball’s top awards.

American League MVP:

1) Jim Thome – While he has slowed somewhat since his sizzling start, Jim Thome has been the best acquisition any American League team has made. Many questioned what he had left, but he put any doubts to rest immediately by homering in his first 2 games and 6 times in his first 10 games. His 10 homeruns and 24 RBIs are tops on the American League’s most talented team.

2) Jason Giambi – His .542 OBP is fantastic as Giambi continues to expand on last year’s comeback- player-of-the-year performance. While he leads the AL in walks with 27, Giambi is not just being passive, as he also leads the AL in RBIs with 27. Only his statuesque defense and stubbornness about embracing the DH role make him second choice.

3) Vernon Wells – The Blue Jays went on baseball’s biggest shopping spree, this off-season, but one of their incumbent players has turned in his best effort so far. With 9 homers, 25 RBIs and a .374 batting average, Wells is carrying a heavy load as Toronto tries to prove that they can keep pace with the Red Sox and The Yankees.

National League MVP:

1) Albert Pujols – Provided he stays healthy, it appears as though this award will be his to lose for many years to come. His record-breaking 14 homeruns in April and 32 RBIs have led the Cardinals to another great start.

2) Lance Berkman – The reason for the Astros’ slow start, last April, was likely because they missed Berkman’s bat. Berkman has had a fast start, this year (10 homeruns, 31 RBIs and .240 BA), and so have the Astros.

3) Carlos Delgado – The best acquisition any National League team made, this off-season, Delgado has really carried the load (10 homeruns and 21 RBIs) while Beltran was injured and Cliff Floyd slumped.

American League Cy Young:

1) Jose Contreras – His 4-0 record and league-leading 1.45 ERA still leads a pitching staff that makes the White Sox the best bet to win the AL Pennant at the sports book.

2) Curt Schilling – Baseball’s biggest loudmouth is once again able to “walk the walk.” His 4-1 record, 2.88 ERA and durability (40.2 IP) have led the Red Sox to an early tenuous hold on first place in the AL East.

3) Kenny Rogers – The ace on a staff of promising young guns, veteran Rogers has done everything you can ask for the Tigers (4-2, 2.59 ERA and a great 0.98 WHIP).

National League Cy Young:

1) Greg Maddux – Talk about giving a club a lift. Once again frustrated by injuries to Mark Prior and Kerry Wood, the cursed Cubbies are thrilled by Maddux’s early renaissance (5-0, 1.35 ERA).

2) Pedro Martinez – The daily updates by a panicked New York press corps on Pedro’s toe during spring training are long forgotten as Pedro has been fantastic (5-0, 0.89 WHIP). He already has beaten the hated Braves twice.

3) Bronson Arroyo – Wow, after the AL East, this is sure easy. Arroyo (5-0, 2.06 ERA) has led the way for baseball’s biggest early season surprise.

Rookies of the Year:

American League:

Jonathan Papelbon – Thrown into the Boston pressure-cooker, Papelbon leads the AL in saves (10) and has yet to allow a run in over 15 innings.

National League:

Prince Fielder – Unlike his father, Cecil, Prince didn’t need to serve some time in the Japanese League to find his stroke. Fielder’s .343 average leads all rookies.

Baseball's Dead Ball Era: 1900 to 1919

Posted on Jumat, 18 Juni 2010 | 0 komentar
Pitchers dominated the pace of the games, and several legendary pitchers established their lasting legacy during this period. Some of the most notable were Cy Young, Walter Johnson and Grover Cleveland Alexander. In part, these fellows and several others were responsible for a lack of offensive production during this period, but there were other reasons as well.

"Dead Ball" also describes the baseball’s actual condition, especially in the latter stages of the games after it had been manipulated, defaced and altered, which was standard practice at that time. Baseballs were considered expensive, and at three dollars each, generally only one ball was used per game. The hardness and aerodynamics of the ball were poor by modern standards and thus the sphere was detrimental to a hitter’s success.

In general terms, even though the ball was "dead" by most accounts, it actually did not provide a huge advantage to either offense or defense. The ball could not be hit for great distance, but the poor condition of the ball decreased the speed while increasing the movement of the pitch, thus making it somewhat easier for the hitters to make contact. Hit balls did not generate the tremendous speed off the bat as in today’s game. This benefited the defenders in the field. Balls were only replaced if they were hit into the stands and lost. There were not many long-ball hitters and "short game" strategy was common, although some sources say that strategy as a whole was lacking in the Dead Ball Era, which may have further added to a lack of offensive production.

The "foul-strike" rule was installed in 1901 in the National League and 1903 in the American, whereas hitters were charged with their first two strikes on foul balls. The new rule benefited pitchers and cause offensive output to decline further. It also remained legal to throw "spit balls", and although illegal, defacing the ball in some way was a very common practice. Consequently, as you might expect with these conditions, hitting a soft, wet, and usually defaced ball resulted in may singles and fewer doubles, triples and homers.

Dividing pitching responsibility among a larger bullpen also became trendy, as did the sacrifice bunt. Both of these strategies had a detrimental effect as well on a hitter’s overall performance. Strangely, there were some legendary record setting hitters from this era, most notably, Ty Cobb. Hailing from Georgia, his nickname was the "Georgia Peach," Cobb was best known for his pinpoint hitting accuracy and his never-say-die stubborn character. He set the record for career batting average at .366 and for runs scored with 2,245; both marks still stand to this day. He also finished his career first in hits; this record stood until the mid-1980s when Pete Rose broke the record. In 1936, Ty Cobb became the very first inductee of baseball’s Hall of Fame, earning 222 out of 226 votes.

During the "Dead Ball Era", managers relied on defensive strategy much more than offensive strategy. It was said, "you could shake a tree and find a bat, but finding a glove was a whole different matter." Offensive skills were not highly sought after by managers. The focus was on defense. Some critics argue that "dead" baseballs probably were not the cause of low scoring, given there was no change in the ball's construction between the high scoring 1890s and the low scoring 1900s. The 1894 season saw the highest offensive totals in runs scored ever recorded in the National League. The construction of the ball was changed in 1911 in an attempt to make the ball livelier and to increase scoring. The balls were corked for the first time. And yet, the Dead ball Era continued for another eight years-until 1919.

In 1908, an incident occurred in the National League that has come to be widely known as the "Merkle Incident." It occurred during a regular season meeting between the Giants and the Cubs, In a tie game with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, runners on first and third, a single hit by Al Bridwell apparently won the game for the Giants as the runner scored from third. However, Fred Merkle was on first and ran to the clubhouse instead of advancing to second base, partly because the fans were mobbing the field at the Polo Grounds and partly because it was not entirely customary in that era to run out game winning hits. The Cubs’ second baseman, Johnny Evers later claimed to have alertly retrieved the ball and tagged second base. By a strict interpretation of the rules, Merkle was forced out at second, and the game winning run nullified. Because of the pandemonium on the field, none of the umpires saw Evers make the play. Since an official protest was registered, the League ordered the game replayed at the end of the season only if it was necessary. It turned out that it was necessary when the Cubs and Giants ended the regular season tied for first place. The Cubs won the replayed game and then went on to win the League pennant and then the World Series. The Chicago Cubs have not won a World Series since.

Even though it wasn’t brought to the media’s and public’s attention until 1920, no article on the Dead Ball Era would be complete without mentioning The White Sox of 1919, or as they have become widely known: the "Black Sox". Many of the White Sox players felt they were underpaid. This was in light of a new trend where owners in both leagues offered the best players much higher salaries than they had been previously paid. At the same time, White Sox Owner Charlie Comiskey felt cutting costs was the best response to a poor showing by his team in 1918. As a result, a conspiracy ensued by eight of the starting White Sox players to throw the World Series.

Many observers of the series suspected this was the case and a long running controversy eventually led to a Grand Jury investigation. Eddie Cicotte was the first to come forward and admit his part in the conspiracy, followed by "Shoeless" Joe Jackson. All eight of the "Black Sox" were suspended from baseball. Even though there was no law against conspiring to throw baseball games, and all 8 players were eventually acquitted, they were all ruled permanently ineligible.

Baseball Q&A: Baseball Facts You May Not Have Known

* What is the difference between baseball and softball?

Baseball is team sport where a player on one team attempts to throw a hard, fist- sized ball past a player on the other team, who attempts to hit the baseball with smooth, tapered, cylindrical stick called bat.

A team scores only when batting, by advancing past a series of four markers called bases arranged at the corners.

Softball is a variant of baseball played with a larger ball on a smaller field. Despite its name, the ball used is not necessarily soft, but it is larger than a baseball and it may have a softer outer layer. The rules of this game vary somewhat from those of baseball.

* What are baseballs made of?

Generally, the core of the ball is made of rubber, cork or a mixture of the two and sometimes, layered. Its constriction varies. Around these are various linear materials that include twin and yarn. Sometimes wool is also used.

A leather cover is used put on in two pieces and is stitched together using 108 stitches of waxed red cotton thread.

* What are bats made of?

Usually, baseball bats are made of wood. Most wooden bats are made from ash wood. Other woods used for making baseball bats are hickory, maple and bamboo.

For professional baseball, only wooden bats are permitted. They are not allowed to be corked or bat that is filled with a light substance such as cork which reduces the weight without costing greatly in hitting power.

For amateur baseball, both wood and metal alloy bats are permitted.

* What are the different kinds of baseball mitts?

In the beginning of baseball, the players did not wear baseball mitts and gloves. They played baseball bare-handed. However, during the evolution of the game, mitts were used and in time, were very important safety equipment in baseball.

Today, there are already different kinds of baseball mitts. These are the catcher’s mitt, baseman’s mitt and fielder’s mitt.

The catcher’s mitt is big, round and padded. The baseman’s mitt is longer than the other kinds of mitts especially when compared to the fielder’s mitt.
The fielder’s mitt has two types, the infielder’s mitt and the outfielder’s mitt. The infielder’s mitt is smaller than the outfielder’s mitt.

* How far apart are the bases?

The baseball bases, along with the home plate, should form a perfect diamond. According to the rules, the distance between each base, starting from the home plate to the first base, from first base to the second base etc., should be less than eighty-nine feet. However, for little league, it should be fifty-nine feet.

* How far is it from the pitcher’s mound to home plate?

The distance of the pitcher’s mound from the home plate is fifty-nine feet, or eighteen meters, with eighteen feet in diameter. This is according to the regulation from the Major League baseball.

The pitcher’s mound is the raised section in the of the baseball field or in the middle of the diamond, to be exact. It is where the pitcher stands when throwing the pitch.

Baseball Practive Can Be Fun

The practice as regards baseball can be, by definition, a drudgery. In order to improve play-related qualifications, the players must carry out reiterated, sometimes society man charges with a research with establishing the memory and the competence of muscle. Nevertheless, take guard to make the survey of practice - the players who fear the won't of practice obtain as much (or anything) out of him, will distract the remainder from the team, and can even stop.

Don't obtain to me false - I believe organzied firmly inside, of the disciplined practices. The troublemakers should be dealth with quickly; the 'till running of coverings which their languages hang outside is a great solution for much of a problem. I am at all above assigning pushups for obstinate cases.

But if you are to spend more distribuerant time of coverings than teaching the suitable manner to establish a drizzle, ask you why. Do you have twelve types to be held around while you strike a grounder at the same time? The only players obtaining are the action the jug, the attrapor, and the smooth paste? Do your whole outfields want to rest in grass, and seem to influence your third basic player to follow the movement? If so, you can have a problem.

Come to practise with a plan. Before you practise, identify the you'd of sectors like your team to work above. If you don't have any what idea outward journey to occur in practice, the chances are, the results that the won't is good... at the very least, much of reject of you'll of valid time.

The stations are the evangile practice. You should spend very small time with the whole team working to the same thing. Instead of that, break your team of them three or four groups. Have a work on striking, a work the balls ground, a work different on jets from relay, etc... After fifteen or twety minutes, turn the groups. This makes sure that each player obtains much more repititions than they never would have differently, and it breaks monotony - before the player is accustomed to make a station, the time of the it to move with the next one. If you don't have enough trainers for this, ask for the parental assistance - or enrôlez to them stands, if need be. Say to them what to make, then go to the next station before they can protest!

Be inventive, and reward your players. Transform the drill into contest - give the points to various teams in your group, and observe the level of intensity rise. Raise the piles by offering a small reward; a gum stick without sugar will motivate a player as you wouldn't believe. Consider distribuerer stickers of helmet (think of the tomahawaks that Seminoles of state of Florida obtain on their helmets of football) for the exceptional interpreters.

Don't underestimate the power of the encouragement. Maintain in the spirit that, as a small trainer of league, you are one of the most influential people that your players will never have in some their lives. Fall of Don't in the trap of the failures always of criticism without identifying the achievement and the effort. If a kid gives something its all, identify this fact, even if it fails. Support it, and it can you astound - and itself - with what it can do.

The time and the energy of reject of Don't to the practice as regards baseball - employ these ends to run better practical.

Baseball Pitching Tips for Kids

Posted on Selasa, 15 Juni 2010 | 0 komentar
Every kid that loves baseball has fantasized about being a great pro pitcher and throwing a perfect game. It’s one of those universal American dreams of little boys everywhere. While dreams like these should never be quashed, its important for responsible adults to teach kids how to pitch a baseball with the correct form and control. Without such guidance, overly enthusiastic children run a real risk of doing damage to their arms, elbows, and shoulder joints when throwing baseballs.

The first thing ever kid needs to learn before he takes the mound to pitch in a baseball game is the correct form. Not only will this give his pitches more power and control, it will also put less strain on the important and vulnerable parts of the body. There are two big keys for baseball pitchers. First, it must be taught to youngsters that effective and safe pitching is powered mainly by the legs, not the arm.

A good training tip is to have players watch several pro baseball games, paying close attention to the form of the pitchers as they wind up and throw. Have them note how the legs are what propel them, and that the arm is really just a means of directing the ball. Kids arent analyzers, and most of them will attempt to pitch a baseball using all arm strength. This is sure path to injury!

The other crucially important aspect of pitching a baseball that must be taught early is the role of the elbow. The natural tendency, especially in kids, is to simply try to throw the baseball as hard as they can each and every time. Again, this invites injury and can actually rob them of speed on every pitch.

The proper form is to train the elbow to lead the hand. The elbow should stay ahead of hand until just before release of the baseball. This takes some practice, but once a child learns to do it without forcing it, he s on the path to better control, more power, and (most importantly) a safe baseball throwing motion.

Caution: in conjunction with this move, baseball pitchers must learn to keep their throwing arm’s shoulder in close to their body. One of the biggest hazards is letting the shoulder jut forward or to the side early in the pitching motion. The elbow moving ahead will put strain on the shoulder joint if it isn’t kept close in. Again, this takes repeated practice, especially for kids for whom baseball pitching is new and whose bodies are not yet under their full control.

A good idea is to impress upon the young pitcher that speed isnt the top priority in good baseball pitching, control is. This serves two purposes. First, it will help you slow him down in order to ingrain the proper and safe movements outlined above. Second, its generally easier to build up speed after control is learned when throwing a baseball than it is to learn control after speed.

The baseball in the United States goes up with the 1840s, but much of other countries took and played the sport little then. Baseball Hitting Tips

Posted on Sabtu, 12 Juni 2010 | 0 komentar
The most valuable advice that a youth baseball coach can give a young hitter is to think about hitting the ball up the middle. If you think about hitting up the middle, you can adjust to hit the ball wherever it is pitched. If you go to the plate hoping to pull the ball, you will struggle hitting an outside pitch. Your front side will have opened up too soon and you will not be able to drive a pitch on the outside part of the plate. You have to have balance in everything that you do in baseball, especially in hitting. Your body is going to move, but you must keep your head still. The only way to do that is to have good balance. Youth baseball bats are no different than adults bats, they need balance.

Concentration at the plate is critical, and positive thinking helps. You have to walk up to the plate saying to yourself, "I'm going to hit the ball. A hitter needs rhythm. Try to watch the pitcher's hand and keep your eye on the ball be aggressive at the plate, but also remain loose and relaxed. If you let your arms get too tight, you will lose the advantage of having good wrist action for your swing, as well as your power.

You should have a purpose to each swing in batting practice. In your first round of batting practice you might concentrate on hitting every pitch to the opposite field. In the next round, try to make sure that you are swinging down on the ball. Prepare yourself for game situations, or the practice will not be as helpful as it could be If you find yourself in a slump, try to concentrate on defense and possibly save the game with a good play. Slumping hitters should remember that it does not always take a home run to help the team.

Youth baseball players and coaches should look to improve the mental outlook of the whole team with positive comments to all players.Negative comments will not bring anything good to the team morale.Hitting is so much about confidence.Hitting a baseball is very difficult skill that sometimes gets overlooked by coaches, players, and parents.Sometimes we take for granted how skilled these youth baseball players are and want even more out of them.Let's just have fun and enjoy this great game of youth baseball.

Baseball History may be ever Changing but some things never Change

Posted on Jumat, 11 Juni 2010 | 0 komentar
Baseball history, like all history, certainly is ever changing, but some aspects of the game have remained unchanged for well over a half-century. There are a few reasons for this - over time the basic rules of the game have for the most part remained unaltered; the development of essential skills continues to involve an investment of time and personnel by ball clubs; and fans have always flocked to see money players and exciting teams.

In 1976, Major League Baseball (MLB) was changed forever with the birth of free agency. Since its inception, the owners had held power over all players. They could trade anyone at anytime and control, with relative ease, what individuals would be paid. Great players, like Babe Ruth, usually commanded solid salaries but with free agency players were able to negotiate their contracts and to go to a team willing to pay their price.

Still, as it had always been, players had to have the skills a team needed to get their price. The one major difference was that players were now able to sign guaranteed contracts, which stated that they would be paid their salary no matter how they performed and even if they were injured.

Seventy-three years before free agency, professional baseball underwent a change that would influence the way in which the Majors conducted business and found players. In 1903 the National Association of Professional Base Ball Leagues, better known as the Minor Leagues, was formed in order to create some order in which Major League teams acquired players from small market clubs. In the 1930s the great Branch Rickey developed the structure for what we know today as the "Minor Leagues." Rickey’s formalization of the "Minors," which became dedicated to developing players who could perform in the Majors, was jokingly called the "farm system" because small town clubs were raising young players "like corn" down on the farm.

Since the 1930s, MLB has relied upon affiliate farm teams to develop players for the big leagues to supply promising prospects for trades, or to simply provide adequate replacements when necessary. Today, the Minor League system is highly developed, bringing players up through A, AA, and AAA ball. When a team is looking to make a trade for a solid Major Leaguer, one way they can sweeten the deal is by including prospects from the minors. Additionally, one way for owners to keep costs down is to bring up players from the "farm team" when they’re ready. By doing this a MLB team can save millions of dollars.

Bringing up an adequate second baseman from the minors and paying him the minimum $327,000 for the season can prove to have more value than paying a veteran infielder 2.5 million dollars. Using a certain number of non-veterans allows a team to spend more money on other positions, especially pitching, which is always at a premium and comes at a high price.

The Minor Leagues have always been a cost-saving venture for clubs but with today’s exorbitant salaries, the strength of the players union, and most clubs carrying payrolls of under one-hundred million dollars, the strategic use of Minor League players can make the difference in both turning a profit and winning the World Series.

Using players from the farm club actually gives owners more power, since those team members who have been brought up are not eligible for salary arbitration until they have three years in the Majors and cannot become free agents until they’ve accumulated six or more years in the big leagues. Today, for a brief part of a player’s career, National and American League owners have the power they used to possess over every player prior to 1976.

Teams looking to win a championship and attract as much revenue as possible have often invested money in key players. Throughout baseball’s history, there have been owners willing to pay more than others. In 1919, some of the Chicago White Sox, which was owned by Charles Comiskey, decided to throw the World Series to their National League counterparts, the Cincinnati Reds.

The White Sox players felt they were both underpaid and under-appreciated by their boss and figured if they bet on the underdog Reds and insured that the National Leaguers would win, they’d make a tidy profit. They did just that, but they also got caught. It became known as the Black Sox Scandal of 1919, and it’s a constant reminder to owners of how a man like Comiskey, who had a whole lot of money, could be penny-wise and pound-foolish.

Of course, spending a lot of money does not insure a team will win the World Series or even the League Championship. Since the New York Yankees payroll exceeded one hundred millions dollars five years ago, they’ve been unable to win it all. The last few years Steinbrenner and company have been handing over two hundred million in team pay. Last year’s champs, the Chicago White Sox, paid out a little over seventy-five million to their players. It was ironic, because they had not won the Series since 1917, prior to the big scandal.

Most analysts agree that a MLB club needs to wisely spend about seventy million to be competitive. That’s why some pundits believe that the Toronto Blue Jays, who reached that magic salary mark this season by adding quality players and about thirty million to their pay roll, are a club to watch.

The basic idea at work regarding salary prior to free agency is that a happy player - one who feels he’s being treated and paid fairly - can equal a happy owner with a winning team. After free agency, the thought became that in order to compete a team had to pay a player what the market dictated and owners, to a degree, had the ability to control that market. These are, in essence, two sides of the same coin.

If we could resurrect Cy Young, Shoeless Joe Jackson, and Home Run Baker and bring them out to the ballpark, they’d certainly still understand the game, even though it has changed. Since their time, there has been the development of specialty pitchers, creation of artificial turf, and the addition of the designated hitter in the American League. The mound, strike zone, and scoreboards are all different too.

Player skills are still fundamentally the same, except more advanced. They would get the idea that a better player should command more money than a player with less skill. But the overall economics of the game would probably baffle those great players. That has added a new type of off-field strategy that owners who want to win must master. Since the turn of the 19th century, it’s been the greatest change MLB has seen.

Baseball Games On The Radio Are A Home Run

Posted on Rabu, 09 Juni 2010 | 0 komentar
It's often said that there's something special about listening to the hometown broadcast of a baseball game on the radio. Now, no matter where they are, baseball fans can follow the fortunes of their favorite team.

Thanks to satellite radio, it's possible to listen to all the live-action coverage of the team of your choice, even if you are on the road or have moved far away from your hometown.

2006 marks the second year of an 11-year broadcast and marketing agreement between Major League Baseball (MLB) and XM, the official satellite radio network of MLB.

MLB games are carried live on XM channels 176 through 189, with Spanish play-by-play and call-in shows on MLB En Espanol (XM channel 190).

In addition to live game coverage, there is a varied menu of baseball-related feature programming available, such as Baseball Beat, a daily roundtable discussion with the top national and local baseball beat writers sharing the stories coming out of their city and teams.

For those in a fantasy league, Fantasy Focus, hosted by sportscaster Jeff Erickson, is a show with reviews of the best and worst fantasy players and advice to callers about how best to manage their teams.

Cal Ripken, Jr., the legendary Baltimore Orioles shortstop and record holder for most consecutive games played, hosts an exclusive, weekly show called Ripken Baseball. From the major leagues to youth baseball, all topics are under discussion. Plus, listeners can e-mail questions.

It's even possible to start the day with a baseball-only show-Baseball This Morning. This news-magazine-style show features leading sportscaster Mark Patrick and veteran player, manager and broadcaster Buck Martinez with MLB news, scores, statistics, player information and a guide to upcoming games on XM.

Said Eric Logan, executive vice president of programming, XM Satellite Radio, "Baseball fans have grown up listening to games on the radio, and now we can hear games from all across the country whether we're in the car, at home or at the ballpark."

Baseball Drills that can make even your Mom into a Player!

Posted on Selasa, 08 Juni 2010 | 0 komentar
Even as adults, there are some who have great difficulty when it comes to the co-ordination needed for sports like baseball. This is where basic baseball drills or sports drills can help even the most inept adult player. For some of these individuals, having to catch a ball can be a daunting task and considered unpleasant. The reason for this feeling of dread is the lack of basic skills that drills or practice can help improve. While some people just seem to have a phobia about sports in general and being involved even at a basic unorganized level is just to painful a consideration.

The problem with just ignoring basic play is that we end up losing yet another part of the child within us. Further, if we have kids, we tend to shy away from playing things that are uncomfortable for us, thereby possibly passing on our problem to our children. This is a pity as with just a little practice, anyone can go out and enjoy getting involved in a a sport. Practice drills will NOT make us everyday work- a- day people into superstars or national league players, but it will allow us the benefit of being active, being with friends, and being involved without the pain of embarrassment.

A good place to start, as with anything is at the beginning. Get yourself a comfortable baseball glove. Believe it or not, I actually prefer getting my gloves at the local thrift shop. The reason for this is the usually these haven't been abused but have been broken in well enough that they're soft and supple. So they're comfortable and cheap!

Get two and find someone in your family or a friend who just wants to throw a ball around. When starting out, I suggest using a a softball mainly because it's a bigger target to catch. It's also a little heavier and will build up your throwing arm while also being somewhat softer. A softball is just more squishy and is more player friendly especially when the baseball tossing starts to heat up and get faster and harder. No sense in bruising your hand with that fast pitch!

Another good practice drill is batting. Here, I suggest just going to the local batting cage and start out slow. The batting machines can be adjusted to almost any level or ability. Start slow with the goal to just hit or make contact with the ball. The idea here is to increase your eye hand and motion coordination while having a little fun. As you get better, have the speed increased and you'll be batting a thousand as they say in no time.

So don't let inability stand in your way of making some great memories this summer. Get out there and be a part of America's sport...Baseball!

Baseball Collectibles in High Demand

Baseball collectible enthusiasts have an appetite for more than just playing cards. The memorabilia that's now being sought after spans the spectrum from bobble heads, bats, gloves, jerseys to autographed balls, caps and even action figures.

Of course the best kind of baseball collectible is the one you were able to secure for yourself - having a baseball player sign an autograph is a memory you won't soon forget.

But for many fans of the sport, baseball collectibles can only be obtained through online purchases or the occasional gift a loved one presented to them. Memorabilia is often passed down from generation to generation, increasing the value of the baseball collectibles throughout the years.

It's just the monetary value of the memorabilia that makes it so special. Baseball is America's favorite past time, and baseball collectibles often provide fond memories of warm summer nights and good times spent with friends and family.

When it comes to keepsakes, the barriers of team against team break down because fans often appreciate the value of a baseball collectible regardless of what team the item originated from.

While cards used to be the primary starter kit for any fan wishing to amass a collection of baseball memorabilia, today's collectors focus on a variety of mementos. Vintage equipment, pins, and pennants are a staple of many fans' baseball collectibles.

Anything carrying an autograph from a player, such as a cap, call, or glove is a prized possession when it comes to baseball collectibles. Bobbing (or bobble head) dolls of players are extremely popular, circulating from as early as the 1950s when baseball was as much a part of every American family's life as the food on their dinner table.

Some fans like to approach their baseball collectibles from the standpoint of team memorabilia, focusing on an entire assortment of Yankee or Red Sox souvenirs. Others prefer to simply collect items from major players of any team, as long as the player made an impact on the game itself.

While modern day figures may not fetch as much as the ones who made this game so popular in the beginning, that hasn't deterred loyal fans from scooping up keepsakes from the headliners of today. Not only are baseball collectibles a good investment of memorabilia, but many fans enjoy the fun they have tracking down special and unique pieces to preserve over the years and pass down to their own heirs.

Baseball Coaching and Strategy

Posted on Minggu, 06 Juni 2010 | 0 komentar
The teams of school offensively have a trainer who directs all the play, and defensive. It usually assied on putting it except play and gives signals to the coaches of first-bases and of third-bases, which pass them in their turn above to the smooth paste or the base-runner.

The principal trainer of a team is responsible to project all the strategy of pre-play and tactic during the play. He composes the lineup, placing his bruisers in the handling positions the beater which he believes will bring the majority of the races. By projecting the lineup, it must also consider which players strike well the ball, who them players are in a recession and with which the players make well against the jug they will have to face.

Order Of Wadding in sheet. - majority of stick of trainers to the same formula in manufacture to the top of an order of wadding in sheet. The bruiser of number 1 is quickly under development, an excellent judge of a ball and a strike, and a player with whom it is difficult to launch because it is small or has a not very common position. This player should have the capacity to draw a great number of walks, of this fact obtaining in position to begin his team towards a race.

The bruiser of number 2 should have about identical qualifications as a man lead-off, but it should be good like bunter and paste smoothes which can strike with the good field. Simple with the good field by the smooth paste of number 2, if the bruiser lead-off is on the basis, most probably will have like consequence a first-and-third situation.

Numbers. 3, 4 and 5 beats should be the bruisers of power. There is not really much difference inside if the bruiser of number 4 should handle the beater the third, or vice versa. However, it is good policy to make strike your paste smoothes stronger in the spot of number 3. In this way it is certain to rise in the first turn of beater, and the surplus the nine turns of beater can obtain more chances to handle the beater than the numbers. 4 and 5 bruisers. Interesting It to note this baby Ruth, largest slugger of baseball , handled the beater in the spot of number 3 in all the major part of its career.

The bruiser of number 6 should be a little stronger than the smooth paste of number 7 since it can have more occasions to lead in the races than the man of number 7. The smooth paste of number 8 is perhaps the weakest bruiser in the lineup, with the jug following in position of number 9.

Many coaches of school which have a jug which is also a fine bruiser, will much higher place the jug in the lineup. There is nothing badly with this strategy, in particular if the jug extremely can and physically to carry to strike, like the burden pitching.

Signals. - each bruiser should know at the time even where to be alert for a signal. Sometimes the situation is so obvious that the bruiser knows automatically that it is on his own with the dish.

With bases empty and one or two strikes on the smooth paste, it completely obvious that the trainer will not say to him to the take with launching. To take a launching means let one go near. This signal is usually given when the smooth paste is in front of the jug in swell-and-strike the account, or if the trainer wants that the smooth paste takes the first launching of the jug in the hope that it will be a ball.

Don't is discouraged if you are ordered to take a launching while you obtain with the dish. There is nothing badly with this strategy, particularly if the jug is tilted to have a little trouble of order. A jug which obtains behind in the account is constantly in the trouble, and when the account obtains two balls and aucunes strikes, or three balls and a strike, you can then obtain the launching which you will be able to drive out for a sure blow.

Follow your trainer in all the things, and your baseball will be only better!

Baseball Betting: How to Bet Basics

Posted on Sabtu, 05 Juni 2010 | 0 komentar
If you know nothing about sports and you still feel the urge to wager, baseball is the easiest sports to wager on. As opposed to football and basketball, where you are mixed up with the point spreads and other confusing calculations, in baseball betting you simply put your money on the outcome of the game. In addition, the baseball season lasts longer, which means more matches and bigger chances to go home with the winning money. Here is a step to step guide to baseball betting.

The main difference between baseball betting and other team sports betting such as football and basketball is that while the latter ones use point spreads, the former uses the money line.

What is a Point Spread?
Point spread is the most common betting type offered in football and basketball betting. The sportsbook spreads the odd of a certain match by subtracting points from the favorite team, which is the team most likely to win and adding points to the underdog, which is the team that will raise a lot of eyebrows if wins.

What is a Money Line?
In baseball betting, the sportsbook sets the odds strictly on the outcome of the match. In order to even the action, bettors would have to risk more money on the favorite and risk less on the underdog. This is called the money line.

For example, if the money line is minus 170 on the favorite and plus 150 on the underdog, then you would have to bet 170 dollars on the favorite in order to earn 100 dollars. On the other hand, if you bet 100 dollars on the underdog, you would win 150 dollars if they would eventually win the match.

The difference between the minus 170 on the favorite and the plus 150 on the underdog is known as the twenty cent line. If the money line was minus on the favorite and plus 150 on the underdog, it is called the ten cent line or dime line. The fifteen cent line is also common in baseball betting.

Sportsbooks also offer total bets and run lines in baseball betting.

1) Total Bets:
These wagers are based on the sum of the runs scored by both of the teams. For example, if the sportsbook sets the over under total of a match as 7, the over wins if the sum of the runs scored by both teams exceeds 7 and the under wins if it sums up to less than 7.

2) The Run Line:
This wager is the baseball variation of point spread. When you are betting on the run line, you are betting on whether one of the teams wins by more than one run, which is marked as minus 1.5 or stays within one run, marked as plus 1.5.

Conclusion:
Although the money line makes baseball betting simpler than football and basketball betting, it causes the payoffs calculation to be more complicated:

1) In order to calculate the payoff when wagering on the favorite you should add 1 to the favorite price and divide it with the favorite price.

2) In order to calculate the payoff when wagering on the underdog you should add 1 to the underdog price.

Baseball Betting: 10 Simple Rules to Keep in Mind

Baseball can be a relatively hard game on which to place bets. We are going to go over a few of the things to look out for and be aware of while getting ready to place your bets for the ballgame.

1) Always betting on your favorite team is usually not recommended. If your team is on a losing streak, it may best to bet on the favorite. It is ok to bet on the other team.

2) Remember to always follow current stats concerning other teams as well as the team you follow. If you only know how your team is doing how can you make an educated guess?

3) Weather is a very important issue in baseball. If it rains before a game and the field is wet it can deter a good player from making the play that he could normally make due to the field being slippery and things of this nature.

4) Take into account that home teams that play in domes have an advantage over the visiting team that does not play in domes and vice versa.

5) Another very important factor is the pitchers. Always check who will be pitching the game. Teams generally try to match their best pitcher with the best pitchers form the other team. If a number one pitcher is overly better than the opposing pitcher, and the batters of the opposing team are not hot, then I would definitely take this into account.

6) Some teams have better home or away records so watching how the teams play at home and away and what games are being played are extremely important to follow and understand.

7) While checking stats, see whether players are playing well or whether they are in slumps, this can add to a teams overall performance in a game.

8) A night game over a day game is another variable to check when researching your bets and how it relates to a particular ball club.

9) Baseball players I think also relate their style and effort depending on where in the whole of the season they are located. If it is the beginning of the year and are not fresh, or are just trying to get their feel of their team, could make all the difference between a win and a loss.

10) Publicity. Find out what the PR is for the team, if there is a certain player that is receiving bad PR or the entire team can take all of the morale out of a good ball club and turn them around into last place.

Baseball is a complex sport, easier to understand when you grow up with it, but still loaded with many variables and factors that change on a minutes notice. So with a bit more experience and a little bit of patience, with these trusted rules, you will be able to win more of your bets while gambling on baseball.

Baseball Bats Facts - Interesting Tidbits

Posted on Kamis, 03 Juni 2010 | 0 komentar
The baseball bat is a simple concept but a pretty complicated object. Here are some baseball bats facts to enlighten you about its interesting history and design. The more you know about baseball bats, the more you will find yourself in love with this fascinating sport. It's essential to get a grip on the bat's most basic concepts before you make a buying decision. So, without further ado, here are some interesting baseball bats facts:

A baseball bat is essentially a smooth “rod” that the batter uses to hit the ball thrown by the pitcher, signaling the other players to run around the bases and ultimately try and score a homerun. The thickest part of the bat, the part that is supposed to hit the ball, is called the “barrel” and the best part of the “barrel” for hitting the ball is called the “sweet spot.” The barrel ultimately gets thinner and thinner until it forms into the handle. On metal bats, rubber may wind around the handle for good grip. The “knob” is at the very opposite end of the barrel's tip and helps a batter to hang onto the bat so that it doesn't fly away! Think about this before purchasing that cheap bat that no one else seems to care for.

In the early days of baseball, younger players were most prevalent and the majority of bats were handmade, so sizes and shapes varied wildly. But as baseball became more of an official, regulated sport, so did the baseball bats. In 1859, rules were made about the diameter of the bat, and to this day every kind of league has their own individual rules. Therefore, be sure you are clear on your league's rules on baseball bat measurements. Although all bats look very similar to each other, there are minuscule differences that are not obvious to the human eye. I hope these historic baseball bats facts were useful!

Although whole of baseball gear has undergone a complete makeover, nothing has changed as much and as fast as the bat. There are many different kinds of bats designed for Little Leagues, Senior Leagues, college, and pros. Each coalition has a congeal of parameters for keg diameter and loop dimensions. It can be unconditional overwhelming when you consider the variety of baseball bat brands, materials, styles, and qualities.

Bat Materials

Basically there are three categories but enough for new comers to get bowled over.

Wood: generally willow wood from Canada and Australia goes into making bats for their good grain and fibrous structure. Seasoned wood is used to make bats which can be evidenced by the long fibers of wider nature. One biggest advantage of wooden bats is customizability as regards to barrel and grip. Contrary to beliefs, heavier wooden bats produce greater impacts than lighter bats by virtue of the momentum. But these are not crack free and the sweet spots get reduced after endured usage.

Aluminum alloys: Get ready to spend about $200 on these. These are stronger yet lighter and help generate greater swing speeds. The general alloy used here is 7046; but special alloys like CU31/7050 with higher zirconium, magnesium and copper content gives higher strength and durability. Ask for more choices in this category. Construction depends on the selling price; so we have single/double layered bats in different alloys for higher impacts, rebounds etc. In addition, cryogenically treated bats give lesser vibration and increased distance.

Graphite/Titanium lined: Beauty of this option is the lightest weight bats. Thinner walled bats lined with titanium/graphite provide desired strength and help reduce the impact shock of hitting the ball away from the ‘sweet spot.’

Specifications

USA Baseball, the governing body, issues charts for bat selection which benefits fresher. The bat can be chosen either by age or by your height. The charts are available at every baseball club and over the internet.

For age between 5-7 years the bat length recommended is between 24"-26" which reaches 34” level for ages above 17 years. The other chart starts for a height of 36-40” with 26” bat till 73”+ having recommended a length of 34”.

Bats are just part of the game and not the game within themselves. Remember the saying, ‘you can take the horse till the lake, but drinking water is his prerogative.’
