Every year around this time I ask myself the same question – why is Billy Packer the lead analyst for CBS’s coverage of March Madness? While Packer is working the game for the TV audience, Bill Raftery is calling the game for the much smaller radio audience with more passion, knowledge, and love for the game than Packer.
Raftery and Verne Lundquist are CBS’s second pair to Packer and Jim Nantz, who have been number one for the past 15 years. Packer seems to be hated by more fans than he is loved, mostly for his intense ACC bias (particularly towards his Alma matter Wake Forest), his refusal to accept mid-major conferences as worthy competition for power conferences, and his inability to admit when he is wrong. Raftery, on the other hand, is revered for his enthusiastic and animated commentary that displays his love for the game.
Packer has repeatedly insulted others with his unwarranted criticism. In 1996 Packer described the Georgetown Hoyas star guard Allen Iverson as a "tough monkey". He also questioned Larry Bird’s Indiana State team, Jameer Nelson’s St. Joseph’s team, and this year’s George Mason team for getting too much respect from the selection committee as mid-majors. Each went on to prove Packer wrong in the tournament, yet Packer will not publicly admit to it or apologize for his comments.
In direct contrast, the fun-loving Raftery is best known for catch phrases such as “[team] is going MAN to MAN”, “Send it in, Jerome", "With the kiss”, and my personal favorite, "Onions!" Raftery is also extremely intelligent when it comes to his basketball IQ. From 1970 to 1982, Raftery was the head coach of Seton Hall University where to he led them to four ECAC post-season tournaments and two NIT appearances
What are you waiting for CBS? Pull the plug on Packer and give the fans what they want - a more knowledgeable, more fun, and less bitter analyst!

In 1981 the NCAA wanted to increase the number of teams that would participate in this tournament from 48 to 64. The NIT declared they wouldn’t be able to hold a first rate post season tournament if this happened. Four years later the modification was accepted and since then there have been 64 teams on the bracket.
In 2001 the NIT filed an antitrust lawsuit claiming the NCAA was trying to put the NIT out of business. With the trial under way last year, the NCAA reached an agreement to buy the NIT and end the litigation.
The NIT is formed by 40 teams. The four top bracket seeds for this year are the Universities of Maryland, Michigan, Louisville and Cincinnati. They all are former NCAA tournament champions.
Basketball icons like George Mikan, Lenny Wilkens, and Walt Frazier are part of the NIT’s history. Future pro legends Reggie Miller and Ralph Sampson were NIT Most Valuable Players.
After 68 years the National Invitation Tournament (NIT) is suffering new changes and improvements after being bought by the National Collegiate Athletic Association, including new marketing strategies, more geographic diversity and TV coverage of bracket selections. The NCAA says it bought the NIT to settle the antitrust lawsuit and to improve the postseason gala for the good of the game.
NYU, Fordham University, Wagner College, Manhattan College and St. John's University owned the NIT through the Metropolitan Intercollegiate Basketball Association. All semifinal and final games have been played at New York's Madison Square Garden. This year's NIT which also starts today ends on March 30th.

Florida Gators received on Monday their first NCAA Championship title after a basketball game played against UCLA Bruins which final score was 73 – 57. UCLA has already won 11 NCAA titles.
More than 43,000 fans were at the limit of their emotions cheering at their favorite team. Florida won the first 17 games of the season and then got better.
Joakim Noah, who took care of keeping Florida’s opponents away from the rim, jumped into a press table and after some Gator-like movements ran toward the crowd to hug his father and other members of his family. Noah’s father is the former French Open tennis champion Yannick Noah.
Joakim Noah or the outstanding player of the Final Four, as he was named, scored 16 points, nine rebounds and six blocks. With this, Noah has set a new record of blocked shots during an NCAA title game.
