Skates, along with your helmet and pads are probably the most important part of your hockey gear. When choosing the best hockey skates, like choosing the best hockey pads, you should take into account all of the different brands and find a size and style that fits you best. Don’t simply buy the first pair of skates you see, but rather shop around and try a few different options to find the ultimate fit.
When trying on a pair of skates you should have your heel tucked back into the heel cup, and there should be no more than about a quarter inch or so in the toe. If your ankles are weak, make sure to ask for a skate with good ankle support. When it comes to skates you will also want to ensure that you have blades with through-hardened steel with a flat rocker. A flatter rocker curve will improve your stability.
Now on to the pads… Ideally you want pants that are long enough to reach past the top of your shin pads. If your pants are too short, they'll leave a small area unprotected which is a prime target for being slashed. You pads can only do so much. Make sure the hard caps in your shoulder pads, elbow pads and shins are intact and in good condition. If you need to, replace your pads on a regular basis. Having old worn pads might be comfortable but it might not give you the protection you need.
When it comes to your mask, you should spare no expense. While the budget option might be cheap, you need to make sure that the outer part of the mask is composed of a strong space-polymer material, and the inside of the mask contains foam. This design should be able to resist impacts while absorbing the shock at the same time. Some cheaper masks cannot offer this, so you do need to be careful. If in doubt, ask your sports supplier, for brands they recommend.
The things you don't want to scrimp on are your skates, your pads and your helmet. Ensure that your helmet has been approved by a regulatory commission for your own safety. Pads are pretty much standard in most leagues now and flat lined curved skates are recommended for recreational and new players. Above all, you need to remember, to have fun!

Carolina might not have started the playoffs with good rhythm but as the first round series got under way against Montreal they started playing really good. They still are and after that they knocked out the Devils in round two 4-1 in the series.
The Hurricanes have speed on all four of their lines and their defense is mobile and gets the puck up the ice quickly. Their power play, when it's on is one of the most dangerous in the NHL. However they need to avoid slow starts and start the games trailing because for them it’s very difficult to get back once they’re trailing earlier in the game.
Ron Brind'Amour is the heart and soul guy, he tends to come up big at key times. Eric Staal is the finisher who gets the puck in crunch time. Watch for Justin Williams as well. He was an impact player against Montreal.
Carolina has a very good regular season and playoffs so far; nothing would be better for them as winning the conference finals and get a shot to win the Stanley Cup as well.
Buffalo on the other hand left out the Flyers in the first round. A team that couldn’t deal with Buffalo’s speed and in the second round; Goalie Ryan Miller was a big difference against the Senators. But a gutsy overall effort that included three overtime wins was what brought Buffalo here.
The Sabres are very fast, quick and opportunistic on offense. Their defensive game was outstanding against a powerful Ottawa team and the Sabres are riding high from what was a major upset win last round.
But they have a few important players injured; Tim Connolly and Dmitri Kalinin are out but the Sabres have been talented enough to not let those injuries overcome their game and be where they are right now.
These Western conference finals will be all about the new era in the NHL. With two pioneer teams that are playing at the top of their game with very innovative types of playing this beautiful game.

In a game against the Memphis Grizzlies on Monday, Minnesota Timberwolves forward Kevin Garnett was frustrated for being called for an offensive foul and reacted by tossing the basketball into the first few rows underneath the basket. The ball apparently hit a male fan, who was wheeled away to the sound of loud booing. Despite the fact that the fan appeared to be uninjured, Garnett was ejected from the game. Today he was fined $5,000 by the NBA.
Garnett’s teammate, Ricky Davis, was also fined $5,000 by the NBA for kicking a ball into the stands in a loss to the Denver Nuggets on Friday.
Detroit Pistons forward Rasheed Wallace was also fined today for throwing an elbow at Cleveland Cavaliers center Zydrunas Ilgauskas, who needed five stitches on his bleeding forehead. The incident occurred in the first quarter of the game on Sunday when Ilgauskas drove to the hoop. Wallace was called for a flagrant foul, which was subsequently upgraded to a flagrant foul two by the NBA.
Wallace did not appear to deny that the elbow was intentional, saying “I’m not going to start the game by cracking a cat in the skull if I don’t get elbowed first.”
Asked if Wallace should have been suspended, Ilgauskas said, “It’s not up to me. You just leave it up to the league.”
Wallace and Ilgauskas will meet again Monday night, as the Pistons and Cavs play in Cleveland.
