Saints Release Dwight Smith

Posted on Selasa, 05 April 2011 | 0 komentar
Dwight Smith was released by the New Orleans Saints last Thursday and he will probably start with another team by the end of this week: the Minnesota Vikings. Apparently he has been meeting with this team’s coaches and officials since last Monday.

Minnesota already has a Pro Bowl free safety: Darren Sharper, who is a nine-year veteran and has registered nine interceptions in 2005, but the team seems prepared to make accommodations to fit Smith into the lineup. If Smith is acquired, Sharper might move to strong safety in the cover two scheme, allowing him to play closer to the line of scrimmage on occasion.

Adding the five year veteran to the Vikings draft would provide Minnesota with a pair of safeties in the scheme that Tomlin established in the off-season, and more support to the standout cornerbacks Antoine Winfield and Fred Smoot.

The Vikings have signed the former Tennessee Titans starting strong safety Tank Williams as an unrestricted free agent and he and the four-year veteran Willie Offord appeared to be ready to compete for the starting job there. Acquiring Smith might change that.

Agent Drew Rosenhaus said that, until a deal is not confirmed, all of the teams that are seriously pursuing Dwight Smith will be in camp by the end of this week. Smith is the kind of safety that many teams want, an interior defender with cornerback-level coverage skills. As a matter of fact, Smith started his career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as a standout nickel cornerback and then he was moved to safety in 2003.

Dwight Smith who is 27 years old, supplies a defense with fantastic flexibility because of his hybrid skills and his ability to move out into the slot and cover wide receivers.

Smith has appeared in 78 games and started 49 of them during his career. He has 306 tackles, one sack, 14 interceptions, 45 passes defended, seven forced fumbles and two recoveries. In Super Bowl XXXVII when Tampa Bay won over the Oakland Raiders, Smith returned two interceptions for touchdowns.

The Mannings: Models of Sportsmen

Peyton and Eli Manning are brothers and NFL players. Peyton is a quarterback for the Indianapolis Colts and embraces numerous NFL passing records, including the record for touchdown passes in a single season: 49 in 2004; and consecutive seasons with over 4,000 yards passing: 6 from 1999 through 2004. He also holds most school passing records at the University of Tennessee.

Eli is the starting quarterback for the New York Giants. Eli helped his team to secure the NFC Eastern Division Title. In the regular season finale, he threw a 78 yard laser to Burress helping his team to a big lead. While the Giants were quickly eliminated in a brutal performance against the Carolina Panthers the following week 23-0, Eli's first full season was seen as a success. He threw for nearly 3,800 yards, tossed 24 touchdowns to only 17 interceptions, and rallied his team to several exciting fourth quarter comebacks.

But this weekend Peyton and Eli are working together in South Louisiana. They're helping many young players get their minds off their homes that were damaged by Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans.

Peyton and Eli Manning are conducting sessions at the Manning Passing Academy at Nicholls State University.

This academy was founded by former Saints quarterback Archie Manning, who is also Peyton and Eli’s father and has been helping high school-age players from all around the country work on passing, running and receiving skills for around 11 years. A crowd that included coaches and college players assisted to help out.

Shortly after Katrina, during the 2005 football season the two star quarterback brothers were between the first celebrities to be seen on the ground in Louisiana, unloading relief supplies for the victims of the disaster.

NFL Training Camps are About to Start

The Philadelphia Eagles and the New York Jets will be opening training camps on Thursday July 20th. These two teams will be the first ones in doing so this year followed by Cleveland Browns and Houston Texans next Sunday. It is expected that by July 30th all teams will be training in the camps.

Lately many teams are training at their regular season headquarters since it appears to have better results given that things are familiar, surprises are reduced and the players get to go to their homes to see their families. This year 41% of the squads will be training at home which equals 13 of 32; while 10 years ago it was 23% of the clubs that did so. It means 7 of 30 teams, although, the teams that encamped away last year were the ones that got the titles of the most recent season.

The Super Bowl XL was disputed by the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Seattle Seahawks. Pittsburgh trained at Saint Vincent College in Latrobe, Pennsylvania for the 40th year and the Seahawks trained at Eastern Washington University in Cheney, Washington.

For fans, NFL season starts warming up with the training camp which are a productive and an exciting time of the year too.

Surveys have shown that fans look forward to NFL training camps in July more than to major summer events in other sports and that they prefer to watch NFL preseason games more than any other sport preseason game. Lately the teams have a tendency to schedule evening practice sessions more often than they used to, that way the fans can join them and watch the games.

The New Orleans Saints and Tennessee Titans will practice at new training camps this year. Some clubs have changed their training sites in the past but others return to familiar locations where they have spent their summer months for years.

Michael Haynes, NFL vice president of player and employee development refers to this saying that it helps the rookies kick off to a good start regarding the new lifestyle they are about to begin. They will be thought on how to develop personal and professional goals that will uphold them during and beyond their playing careers.

Among the topics that will be examined are life skills, personal finance, personal conduct, media policy, life as a rookie, substances of abuse, family issues, personal experiences, NFL security, player development, football operations, success in the NFL and life after football.

The Symposium will be given by members of the National Football League office and clubs, NFL Players Association, professionals in specific areas, current and former NFL players who have experienced themselves the problems inherent in some of the topics exposed.

Bellamy is Going Back to the Football Field

Bellamy would be getting back to the field after a shoulder injury suffered during last season's third game that kept him away from football games. That hadn’t happened to him since 1995. Bellamy has 13 years of experience at the National Football League and he is just waiting to come back to help the New Orleans Saints defense.

Since he joined the Saints in 2001, Bellamy has 451 total tackles (334 solo), nine interceptions, 4.5 sacks, six forced fumbles and five fumble recoveries. His veteran savvy and leadership was missed in the New Orleans' secondary over the final 13 games of the year.

He started all 67 games as a Saint prior to his injury -- 122 overall (the longest streak among all NFL defensive backs) before he went down on the first defensive series at Minnesota on September with a rotator cuff injury. But, that disappointment was reduced during the rest of the season as he stayed around to support his teammates.

It seemed that Bellamy would have another great year as he did in 2004, time when he accomplished 116 total tackles, 2 forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries but the 11 tackles (eight solo) in the first three games in 2005 was all he could do that season before he experienced his shoulder injury.

Bellamy was originally signed by the Seattle Seahawks as an undrafted free agent in 1994. On November that same year he was placed on reserve/injured by the Seattle Seahawks. In 2001 he was signed by Saints to a four-year contract (UFA) and in 2005 he was re-signed by Saints to a three-year contract (UFA). In 2005 he was placed on Reserve/Injured by the Saints.
